Michigan > Somerset Stampede Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk
Somerset Center, MI  •  Saturday, August 17, 2013  •  Course Map

Filled with rolling hills along both paved and dirt country roads here in southern Michigan, in the horse country that lies just a few hours' drive west from Detroit, the countryside around Somerset Center plays host each August to the annual Somerset Stampede Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk, which takes runners on an out-and-back tour of the area's rural roads, horse farms and bucolic countryside.

Just over 250 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in both races combined at the event's 2011 running, including 129 runners in the half marathon alone. The race features a mix of paved roads and dirt hiking and horseback riding trails, the course takes participants on a clockwise, out-and-back loop through the countryside south of town, starting and finishing near Mission Lake.

The race is mostly hilly throughout, starting near the lake at an elevation of just over 1,100 feet above sea level, reaching its lowest point early in the race at the first mile marker, and rising to a peak of nearly 1,200 feet around mile marker 5 and 11. All along the way, the scenery is the picture of a rural horse country postcard, as tree-lined paved country highways give way to dirt roads with plenty of wide-open fields and pastures.

While the half-marathon is open to runners only, the 5K race is open to both runners and walkers. Both races begin at 7:30 AM at the Somerset Beach Campground near Mission Lake, on Brooklawn Court.
