Part of a series of half marathon race events scheduled throughout the United States in smaller to medium-sized towns and cities -- a series that also includes races in Columbia, S.C.; Council Bluff, Ia.; and Dade City, Fla., to name a few -- the Greenwood Half Marathon, 5K & Fun Run is one of nearly 30 races organized by the USRA Half Marathon Series.
The race takes runners along the roads that wind around Lake Greenwood State Recreation Area, which boasts more than 200 miles of shoreline and more than 11,000 acres that play host to fishing and boating throughout most of the year here in the western Piedmont region of South Carolina, within just over an hour's drive of the state capital to the east in Columbia.

Located in the western part of the state, roughly 55 miles south of Greenville and about 70 miles west of the state capital Columbia, the city of Greenwood typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in April, when average monthly temperatures range between 74°F and 45°F. On the day of the race (April 30), the average high is 77°F and the average low is 49°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.1 inches for the month, making April the city's driest month of the year.
