Runners follow an out-and-back loop course for the half marathon at the Nookachamps Winter Runs, which starts and finishes on the campus of Skagit Valley College and takes runners along the Skagit River between Mount Vernon and nearby Clear Lake. While most of the course is fast and flat, there is a steep grade runners will hit just as they’re approaching — and right after they pass through — Clear Lake.
