The hills of this southwest Texas town, known perhaps most famously as the gateway to Big Bend National Park just to the south, serve as the course for the annual autumn running of the Marathon 2 Marathon races.
The event features a full 26.2-mile marathon, a half marathon and a 10K run, all of which finish underneath a big black “M2M” banner in the town of Marathon, following the run along the winding hills of U.S. Highway 385 between the nearby town of Fort Stockton and Marathon.
First run as an official race in 2003, the event’s half marathon was added for the first time in 2006. Transportation is provided for runners to the full marathon starting line as well as to the half marathon start, and runners are encouraged to enjoy the stark natural beauty of the West Texas scenery all along the course, and to keep an eye on the traffic, as one lane along the highway is cleared for runners while the other is open to cars and trucks passing by.
After the race’s completion, runners are invited to the event’s post-race party at the Marathon Motel Court Yard, which will feature music from “8 PM until late,” race organizers add. The scheduled starting time for the full marathon race is 7:30 AM, followed by the half marathon at 8:30 AM.
