Set for its 7th annual running in the fall of 2015 — during what is usually one of the Atlanta metro area’s mildest and most pleasant-weather months — the Michelob Ultra Atlanta 13.1 Marathon & 5K takes runners and walkers on a hilly, tree-lined course through the residential neighborhoods around Cumberland Mall.

The race is one of the final running events of the year in a series of eight “13.1 Marathon”-themed race events across the country — there are also races in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Miami Beach, Boston and Fort Lauderdale, from January through November — the Atlanta race includes a half marathon and a 5K race, both of which are open to runners as well as walkers, provided they complete the 13.1 miles within the 3 1/2-hour time limit.

After being run for the past few years in Atlanta’s Brookhaven neighborhoods, where it started in Town Brookhaven, a mixed-use residential and retail development along Peachtree Road, just down the street from the campus of Atlanta’s Oglethorpe University, the race moves to an entirely new location for 2014 — about 30 miles north to Cumming, a city just west of Lake Lanier.

The race follows an out-and-back loop route that begins and ends at the Lanier Tech Forsyth Conference Center at the intersection of Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Majors Road. From there, the course makes loop along the roads and neighborhoods south of Fowler Park, and then heads back to the conference center for the race finish.

Runners will make their way along (in order): Majors Road, Shiloh Road, Union Hill Road, Ronald Reagan Boulevard, MacFarland Parkway, Shiloh Road (again), and then back to Majors Road before turning into the Forsyth Conference Center for the race finish.

Runners will definitely need to be ready to run a hilly race at this event, and the biggest changes in elevation occur between the mile 3 and 4 markers, and then again between mile markers 7 and 10.

More than 1,600 runners crossed the finish line in both the half marathon and 5K combined at the race’s 2014 running, including just over 1,500 finishers in the half marathon alone.

Race Weather & Climate

The fall season brings typically cooler and drier weather conditions to the Atlanta area, after summers that can often be very hot and humid. In nearby Cumming, October temperatures average between 48ºF and 71ºF, while rainfall totals average just over 3.7 inches, making it the area’s driest month of the year.

On race day (Oct. 4), the average low is 53ºF and the average high is 76ºF.
