Set for its 8th annual running this spring along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the nearly 20-mile-long greenway trail built on an old railroad corridor that connects Greenville with the nearby town of Travelers Rest, S.C., the Mountains to Main Street race features a half marathon, half triathlon, 5K and a 1K fun run, all of which finish at Greenville’s Peace Center overlooking the Reedy River.

In keeping with the name of the event, the race begins in the “mountains” just north of the city that’s home to Furman University, in Travelers Rest, a small town of just over 4,500 souls that sits nestled in between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the city of Greenville, in the Upstate region of South Carolina.

From the starting line at Trailblazer Park, the race begins with a loop around the town for nearly two miles before turning off McElhaney Road and onto the Swamp Rabbit Trail just before runners reach the second mile marker. That starts a stretch that keeps you on the trail for the next 11 miles, running slowly but steadily (and very gradually) downhill as you make your way from the “mountains” into the city. Run through Furman University. There’s one loop that takes you off the trail around the mid-way point of the race, for a run around the campus of Furman University. You’ll run along the shoreline of Swan Lake in the middle of the campus for most of this stretch, and then through the heart of campus before re-joining the trail after passing mile 6. The course descends from an elevation of about 1,100 feet above sea level at the starting line to just over 930 feet at the finish line, and there are some rolling hills, especially in the first few miles of the race. After you re-join the trail once you’ve made it through the Furman campus, the hills largely flatten out as the Swamp Rabbit Trail takes you into Greenville for the finish at the TD Stage at the Peace Center, along the Reedy River.
