A few hundred runners take to the trails around Greensboro’s Lake Brandt each spring for the Owl’s Roost Rumble Trail Half Marathon & 4-Mile Run, which unfolds along mostly natural-surface dirt trails filled with tree roots, rocks and fallen branches as well as plenty of switchbacks and hills to keep you on your toes.

The course for the out-and-back trail half marathon starts at Lake Brandt’s Bur Mil Park, on Owl’s Roost Road.

From there, runners follow paved surfaces for the first half-mile of the race and then head out onto the Owl’s Roost Trail, which is just over 4 miles of single-track mountain bike trails that wind along the edges of the lakeshore, through the thickly forested areas that surround the water. After crossing a bridge over the lake, runners then get a quick breather with the paved Greenway Trail before hitting natural surface trails once again, on the Nat Greene Trail. This stretch of the trail also includes plenty of small uphills and downhills as well as plenty of rocks, roots and switchbacks, and unfolds along roughly a three-mile stretch through the woods before putting runners out onto Lake Brandt Road near the marina, where one of the course’s two water stations will be available.
