Though it’s more commonly known as one of Utah’s most popular ski resort towns — several events at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games were held on the slopes here — in the summer runners will get to see what the mountains and hillsides look like without snow here just 30 miles east of Salt Lake City at the Park City Half Marathon & 5K.
The race takes runners on an out-and-back tour of the residential neighborhoods, paved roads and running, walking and biking paths that snake through the area known as the Snyderville Basin, just a short drive north from Park City. The race starts and finishes at Newpark Plaza, the shopping center located just off Interstate 80 and Highway 224, and from there head south toward Park City.
Runners in both race distances start the race there, and head out on a loop around Park Lane and Highland Drive. Just before runners reach the first mile marker, they head out onto the pathway just off Highland Drive, and from there they’ll remain on the path for most of the rest of the race, as it unfolds along both paved and gravel surfaces.
As runners head south along the trail — the half marathon follows the last six miles of the marathon route — the elevation climbs for the entire first half of the race, rising some 400 feet in elevation between the starting line and the mid-way point of the half marathon.
Along the way, runners will pass by the Swaner Nature Preserve as they head south, past its pristine wetlands on the way down to the tunnel that runs beneath Highway 224 between mile markers 5 and 6 in the race.
The half marathon race was redesigned last year, replacing the out-and-back used in previous years. The course this year will feature long stretches along Highland Road, Trailside Drive and North Old Ranch Road, as well as stretches through the open space where the McLeod Creek path runs — taking runners past stands of aspen trees and beaver ponds, and over plank bridges along the trail.
