Run as a benefit fundraiser for Bowling Green’s Family Enrichment Center, the Run & Walk For Children Half Marathon takes more than 100 runners each year along an out-and-back course through the area known as Plum Springs just north of the city.

The race starts and finishes at Ephram White Park on Mt. Olivet Road, northeast of downtown Bowling Green, where pre-race snacks are available.

The first three miles of the half marathon follow the route of the 5K, which is run entirely within the park and features small rolling hills through the first section of the race.

While the 5K racers cross the finish line, the half marathoners turn around and hit the roads–Fairview Boiling Springs Road, to be specific. The first big uphill stretch starts here, and it continues for the next mile before turning right onto McGinnis Quarry Road for a brief out-and-back stretch. There’s another brief uphill stretch after returning to Fairview Boiling Springs Road but before reaching the halfway point of the race; after that, it’s downhill for the next mile or two. The turns onto Dirkin Boiling Springs Road and Girkin Road near miles ten through twelve promise to be the hilliest portion of the course, with steady ups and downs for several miles. Not to worry, though–the last mile is a solid downhill coast to the finish line back at Ephram White Park. Also well worth your while is a visit to nearby Mammoth Cave National Park, whose more than 360 miles of underground caves form the longest known cave in the world. Visitors to the 52,380-acre park can also take in some camping, horseback riding, trail hiking and much more.
