In between the race start and finish, runners can expect a very gradual downhill run punctuated with rolling hills.
The Gateway State Trail section of the race — roughly its first 7 1/2 miles or so — take runners along the former route of Minnesota’s Soo Line Railroad, which ferried both freight and passengers between St. Paul and Duluth between the 1940s and the 1960s.
The first eight miles of the course are on the paved Gateway Trail; a former Soo Line Railroad route. At the eight-mile mark runners leave the Gateway Trail and proceed south on Lansing Avenue enjoying the scenic rural countryside.
The final two miles gradually changes from rural to small town with the course taking runners past homes more than a century old in residential Stillwater to finish at Pioneer Park on the bluffs above Stillwater.
