runsignup-blueRunners will get to choose between two different types of trail terrain, at the newly renamed “Duel” Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K, which takes runners on either the dirt trail known as the Wee-Chi-Tah Trail here in Wichita Falls, or on the paved running, walking and biking Wichita River Trail, depending on which day and race they choose.

For runners who wish to tackle what the race organizers describe as the “world famous” Wee-Chi-Tah Trail — a roughly 12-mile-long dirt trail that winds along a bend in the Wichita River near Lucy Park in Wichita Falls, which is also home to the “world’s littlest skyscraper,” the Newby-McMahon Building on LaSalle Street — you can run a 13.1-mile, 26.2-mile or a 10K.

Runners who want to stay on paved surfaces can run any of those three distances on Sunday on the paved Wichita Falls Circle Trail, which stretches between Lucy Park at its westernmost point all the way along the bend in the river to the Wee-Chi-Tah Sculpture, which is located near the Front Street bridge that spans the river, and just across the Wichita River from O’Reilly Park.

The sculpture, which depicts a Native American woman from the Comanche tribe waist-deep in the river to test its depth while the rest of her party waits along the riverbank, was inspired by the legend of the “Crossing” here, from which the city gets its name (“Wee-chi-tah” means “waist deep”).

The starting and finish line for the race lies just off the trail, near the Kay Yeager Coliseum along Kell Boulevard. From there, runners head out on the out-and-back courses for each of the races.
