Runners make their way along an almost all downhill course in the 13.1-mile race at the Holualoa Tucson Marathon, from its starting line just north of the Tucson metropolitan area to the finish line at the Golder Ranch Fire Station, just off Golder Ranch Road.

Runners start this point-to-point race — which is run entirely on paved surfaces, largely along Arizona Highway 77 — on Biosphere Road, just a short drive from Biosphere 2, the Earth science research facility that’s an entirely closed system in the Arizona desert, where researchers study farming and technology and humans’ interaction with nature.

From there, the half marathon — which is sponsored by Damascus Bakeries — follows the final 13 miles of the full marathon course, which starts on Cody Loop Road to the east. Once runners join up with Highway 77, they follow it west and south for roughly the next 9 miles, until they reach the turn onto East Golden Ranch Drive. After that, runners complete a nearly square loop before crossing the finish line at the Golder Ranch Fire Station. For both races, the race course unfolds in the shadow of the nearby Santa Catalina Mountains, whose Catalina State Park and other nearby parks like the Coronado National Forest are popular recreational getaways from the heat of the city in the summertime, for their hiking trails and pools.
