As the county seat of Marathon County, Wausau lives up to its county’s name by hosting the Wausau Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay each August, which takes runners through the sights of this small city.

Appropriately enough, the half marathon begins and ends in Wausau’s Marathon Park and heads east across the Wisconsin River, which divides the city of Wausau into eastern and western sections.
From there the half marathon continues south along Prospect Avenue until just before completing mile 3, when two quick turns ensure that the course continues to the south.
Most of the course continues south of the downtown Wausau area before turning around at the halfway point and heading back north toward Marathon Park.
While most of the course repeats the steps of the half marathon’s first half, the last three miles are different from the first three miles, leading runners to the finish line through a route south of the race’s beginning.
Not up to running the full marathon or half marathon? The event also offers a marathon relay for four people, where each person runs approximately 6.5 miles of the marathon course.
