Running a marathon can be intimidating, whether you’re a long-time runner or participating in a long-distance race for the first time. From logistics to traveling alone, there’s a lot to worry about — let alone the actual running. But the Richmond Marathon is here to take all of those race-day jitters away and help you make a few new friends at the same time.

Named America’s friendliest marathon by Runner’s World, the Allianz Partners Richmond Marathon offers an exciting atmosphere, a beautiful course, social activities, and so much more for those runners who just want to have fun. It’s also a Boston Marathon qualifying course, so there is plenty of friendly competition here, too.

If you want to explore a vibrant, friendly city and check a fall marathon off your list, this is the race for you.

What to Know About the Richmond Marathon

  • Date: September 16, 2024

  • Races: Marathon, Half Marathon, and 8k
  • Cost: $40-$120

In 2024, race day is on November 16 when you can participate in the full marathon, half marathon, or 8k race. If you sign up before September 16, registration for race day events costs $120, $105, and $40 respectively in addition to service fees. For an extra challenge, you can participate in all three events — one on race day and the two others virtually during the month of November — as part of the Richmond Challenge.

October 31 is the last day to defer your race registration until 2025 if needed. The race also offers virtual and in-person training teams leading up to the race as well as detailed participant tracking on the big day.

What Makes the Richmond Marathon Unique?

The people and the city of Richmond are the main reasons that this marathon is so special. As a city with a small-town feel and a big running club culture, it’s no surprise that Richmond was named an official “Runner Friendly Community” by the Road Runners Club of America.

From official party zones designated for spectators to the active city lifestyle, race day brings a joyful vibe that you won’t find at every other marathon. That’s why we feel the Richmond Marathon is one of the best marathons for beginners and seasoned runners alike.

The course takes runners through several different neighborhoods with a lot of rowdy spectators (shout out to Northside!), scenic riverfront views, a few rolling hills, and an exhilarating, iconic downhill finish. High fives and enthusiastic cheers from passionate locals are a part of the Richmond Marathon’s 47-year tradition.

Once you finish our 26.2 miles, you can look forward to the epic riverfront afterparty on Brown’s Island and some killer swag bags.

Who Should Participate?

Spoiler alert: Anyone!

Thanks to its mild elevation and relatively easy terrain, the Richmond Marathon is suited for runners of all paces and experience levels, and first-time marathoners are always welcome.

With race day coaches on the sidelines throughout the course, you’ll be in good hands if you need a little encouragement. (Pro tip: We highly recommend incorporate some hill training into your marathon prep to help you tackle some of the course’s more elevated terrain.)

The Richmond Marathon is also an ideal fun race for anyone trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Because of this, you’ll also find plenty of serious, seasoned marathoners at the starting line.
